Initial situation:

Currently, for the production of engineered wood (chipboards, MDF, OSB, wood fibre insulation, plywood) mainly synthetic binders are used which are primarily made of crude oil or natural gas. Through the classification of formaldehyde as mutagen and carcinogen, binding agent alternatives are the main challenges of the woodworking industry. Beside proteins, field beans contain tannins, which allow a sustainable use of various components of the beans. Therefore, the issue of this project is the development of tannin-protein-complexes (TPC) from field beans and its application as binders for engineered wood. Based on the new TPC, wood-based materials with low-emission and need-based features are developed with a concurrent formaldehyde-free adhesion.

 

Aim:

The objective of this project is to develop a particle-based wood material on the basis of formaldehyde-free binders made of the field beans tannin-protein-complexes. Therefore, ways to extract tannins from the field bean’s skin and proteins from the bean itself are going to be generated, as well as biotechnological synthesis of the TPC. Wood materials are going to be produced under the use of new binding formulations and its mechanical, physical and chemical characteristics are going to be evaluated.
